Hi, I’m Juanjo López
I am graphic and type designer designer, letterer and letterpress printer from Madrid.
I’m interested in old vernacular type designs, and love to learn every aspect of manual typography, calligraphy, lettering, or letterpress printing.
I just have fun drawing letters and making fonts. Sometimes it’s about making a tool to fits the needs of somebody’s project, sometimes I only try to capture the shapes that haunt my head and draw every time I pickup a pen.
You can buy my fonts here, but almost all my digital type work is distributed by YouWorkForThem or MyFonts, among others. The licenses here are for desktop publishing, for web, app or extended licenses, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I also love to make custom fonts, I have work both with big agencies and individuals. Please contact me for custom fonts or lettering commissions.
Beside the typography classes in design schools, in the few last years I have teach lots of type related workshops around Spain.
On one hand, with the Familia Plómez letterpress collective, I have given lectures and wood and lead typesetting and printing workshops both in our printshop and in Valencia, Sevilla, Bilbao, Córdoba, Granada and Logroño.
Lettering and rubber stamps at Vudumedia, Bilbao. 2015
On the other hand, I teach workshops together with Eva Mengual, from the printshop Laseiscuatro, in which we try to mix the basics of lettering design with the basics of some craft printing technique to give the designs a proper life beyond the pencil on tracing paper.
We adapt to the equipment in the place we do the workshop, but all are techniques that students could do at home, such as photopolymer printing, rubber stamps or lithography.
Type design course at Familia Plómez
We try to touch every side of typography, starting with history, letterpress practices, calligraphy and finally a type design project led by Andreu Balius.
In this course I teach the first computer related classes, showing the students the basics of vector type drawing and the odds and possibilities of type design programs.
